How to apply and hiring process information

Applying for a permanent job

  • Each position has different application instructions and requirements.
  • See the specific job announcement for the job announcement code, detailed job requirements and directions on how to apply.
  • Job announcements can be found on our available employment page.
  • Application materials are accepted only for those jobs for which the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) has provided specific application instructions and a job announcement code.

What happens next?

Once you have submitted the required application materials, WisDOT will review the materials, send you a "notice of exam results" and invite the most qualified candidates to participate in the next step of the selection process. The next step will typically be an interview, but in some cases may be another evaluation, such as an examination or request for additional information.

Why did I receive a notice of exam results?

If you have applied for a job by following the application instructions, you will receive a "notice of exam results." Although in some cases it may not seem like you took an exam, each time you submit application materials for a position, it is considered an examination. State government operates under a civil service merit system. This means that we must make hiring decisions based on an individual's qualifications and ability to perform the job duties. By administering an examination to all applicants, we ensure the hiring process is fair to everyone.

Exams can take many forms and range from a formal multiple-choice exam to submittal of a resume and a 2-page paper outlining specified areas of your experience and education. Again, each job announcement will outline the specific application instructions. Visit the Office of State Employment Relations, for more information on how to apply for a civil service position.

Is there an application form I will need?

To apply for most WisDOT positions you will need to complete and send the state employment application form pdf along with other specified application materials.
