Police Communications Operator

State Patrol Police Communications Operators (PCOs) are non-sworn telecommunications specialists who provide a "life-line" to state law enforcement officers, including troopers, inspectors and DNR wardens. PCOs are trained to operate highly complex computers and communications equipment, and provide liaison and technical expertise to various other state and federal agencies. They provide information and assistance to the news media and the motoring public. PCOs must make decisions that are critical to the outcome of emergency situations. The information that is provided by them to field personnel is necessary for appropriate enforcement action and is often vital to officer safety.

The State Patrol is looking for candidates who:

• Can make decisions
• Remain calm under pressure
• Have good memory and organizational skills
• Can work both independently and as part of a law-enforcement team

The State Patrol has five regions located around the state. Within these five regions there are seven post locations: Waukesha, Tomah, Fond du Lac, Wausau, Eau Claire, DeForest and Spooner. Each post employs several PCOs.
