The next recruit class will begin training on October 6, 2013. The State Patrol anticipates filling 40-45 positions. A two-year probationary period is required. Application deadline is June 6, 2013.

How to apply

These positions require applicants to complete a multiple-choice exam. Examinations will be administered at three locations.

  1. Waukesha County Technical College (WCTC) on Friday, June 14 and Saturday, June 15, 2013. WCTC is located at 800 Main Street in Pewaukee.
  2. Hill Farms State Transportation Building on Monday, June 17, 2013. Hill Farms is located at 4802 Sheboygan Avenue in Madison.
  3. Northcentral Technical College (NTC) in Wausau on Friday, June 21 and Saturday, June 22, 2013. NTC is located at 1000 W. Campus Drive in Wausau.

In order to register for this exam, you must complete an on-line questionnaire. In the on-line questionnaire, you will be asked the date and time you will be able to complete the exam. Although we will attempt to accommodate all scheduling preferences, you may be scheduled for an alternate date and/or time if necessary. Multiple-choice exams will be scored on-site. Immediately following, those applicants that pass the multiple-choice exam will participate in an interview.

After completing the on-line questionnaire, you will receive an automated email confirming completion of your registration. A second email will follow within one week which will contain detailed information on what to expect the day of the exam. The second email will also direct you to an application and release form that must be downloaded and brought with you to the exam. In addition, please be prepared to bring the following with you the date of the examination: an unofficial copy of college transcripts, two copies of your resume and two copies (signed and dated) of 2-4 letters of recommendation. Veterans should also be prepared to bring a copy of their form DD-214.

After the exams

Results from the initial interviews will be reviewed and successful applicants will be scheduled for a second interview. Results from both interviews will be reviewed and successful applicants will be referred for a background investigation. Applicants of excellent character, as determined by the background investigation, will proceed to the written and oral psychological testing, physical agility, physical examination, drug screening and hearing and vision tests.

Successful applicants will begin their employment as "Cadets" and undergo approximately 23 rigorous weeks of comprehensive paid law enforcement training at the State Patrol Academy. These weeks of law enforcement training is a requirement of even the most qualified Cadets regardless of previous law enforcement experience, education or training. Cadets must live at the Academy during the week and return home on the weekends. There is no charge for room and board at the Academy.

Upon satisfactory completion of training, Cadets will be sworn in as State Patrol Troopers or Inspectors and assigned to one of five regions around the state. Geographical selection and placement for these positions shall be determined by academy class ranking, with the Cadets having the higher rank selecting the first vacancy of their choice, etc. Therefore, Cadets must be willing to accept any geographical location and classification (Trooper or Inspector) throughout the state. After receiving their assignment, Cadets may be eligible for moving expense reimbursement, temporary lodging and a stipend of $1,000.
