Temporary jobs are referred to as limited term employment (LTE). While limited term employment does not automatically lead to or enjoy the same benefits as permanent employment, these positions provide valuable work experience and an opportunity to explore different permanent job and career options at WisDOT.

• Applicant must be a Wisconsin resident at the time of appointment to a LTE job. Definition of Wisconsin resident.
• Positions are limited to 1,043 hours of work in a twelve-month period.
• Positions vary in duration and work hours. For example, you may work half-time for one year, full-time for six months or some other combination of hours depending on program needs, budget constraints, or seasonal demands. Note: not all LTE positions guarantee 1,043 hours of work.

How do I apply for a LTE position or an internship?

• Some LTE positions are advertised specifically on our available jobs page, while other LTE jobs may not be advertised at all.
• If you see a specific LTE job advertised, then follow the application instructions provided.
• LTE jobs do not require applicants to take a civil service exam.

What benefits are LTEs eligible to receive?

• Workers' compensation
• Unemployment compensation
• Social security
• Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) participation. Once a LTE has worked for 600 hours within a one-year period, they begin participation in the WRS.
• Health insurance. Once a LTE begins participation in the WRS, they become eligible to enroll in the state health insurance program and pay the full premium. With six months of WRS participation you become eligible for state participation (partial premium payment).
• LTEs are not paid for vacation, sick leave or holidays (unless asked to work holidays).

What are internships?

Internships are limited term employment opportunities for students or other individuals who may be looking for experience in a specific discipline. Internships provide valuable experience to the employee while contributing needed human resources to WisDOT programs.
