Every year, some of the best design projects are nominated for the WisDOT Excellence in Highway Design Awards.

Best rural design by WisDOT - US 10

Best Rural Design by WisDOT

  • US 10 in Wood County, designed by the NC region
  • Jeff Stewart was the WisDOT Project Manager, with Nick Vos the Project Leader
  • The 3.8-mile project established new four-lane expressway, and was one of the first WisDOT projects designed and bid using Civil 3D

Best rural design by consultant - US 41-45 Interchange

Best Rural Design by Consultant

  • US 41-45 in Winnebago County, designed by CH2MHill for the NE region
  • Tom Buchholz was the WisDOT project manager
  • This complex interchange is part of a 17-mile segment being expanded from 4 to 6 lanes. The project included mainline construction plus six ramps

Best urban design by WisDOT: East Washington Avenue

Best Urban Design by WisDOT

  • East Washington Avenue in the City of Madison, Dane County, designed by the SW region
  • Jan Bennett was the WisDOT Project Manager, with Amy Coughlin and Travis Feltes the design leaders
  • This urban project reconstructed the six-lane arterial connecting downtown to the city’s east side, adding sidewalk, bike lanes, and bus facilities – all while maintaining traffic during all phases

Best urban design by consultant - University Avenue

Best Urban Design by Consultant

  • University Avenue in the City of Madison, Dane County, designed by KL Engineering for the SW Region Local Program
  • Mark Sponem and Brenda Schoenfeld were the WisDOT Local Program project managers
  • This project reconstructed a deteriorated 4-lane undivided road into a multi-modal corridor serving as a western gateway into Madison

Best structure design by WisDOT - Hay Creek Bridge

Best Structure Design by WisDOT

  • Hay Creek Bridge in Chippewa County, designed by the WisDOT Bureau of Structures and the NW region
  • Chad Hines was the Project Manager, with structural design by Bill Oliva and Brandan Burger, and geotechnical design by Bob Arndorfer and Jeff Horsfall
  • This project is the first Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil Integrated Bridge System in the State of Wisconsin

Best structure design by consultant - Ken Hendricks Memorial Bridge

Best Structure Design by Consultant

  • Ken Hendricks Memorial Bridge in the City of Beloit, designed by GRAEF for the SW region
  • David Layton was the WisDOT Project Manager
  • The bridge was widened to accommodated four lanes of traffic, a sidewalk, and a shared-use path, by retrofitting new pier columns on the existing substructure. It also features programmable underdeck LED lighting

Special recognition - Mitchell Interchange

Special recognition

  • Mitchell Interchange in the City of Milwaukee, designed by MTP
  • Bill Mohr was the WisDOT supervisor
  • The MTP joint-venture created plans for a $350 million state-of-the-art interchange reconstruction that included 29 new bridges, three tunnels, 52 retaining walls, 16 noise barriers and 83 sign structures
