US 41 project
continues to meet goals
By the end of September, a $553,000
demolition project in Oshkosh will be complete, marking a successful
start for DBE participation in the first significant letting for the US
41 corridor expansion project in Brown and Winnebago counties. The
contract awarded to the prime contractor, R & R Wash Materials in
late June, included a goal of 10% DBE participation. That target was
reached as two DBE subcontractors, Ground Effects of WI, Inc. and Lori
King Trucking, were hired by the prime to haul away debris from a five
acre work site near the WIS 21/US 41 interchange, where an old hotel,
restaurant and several other buildings once stood.
The goal for DBE participation was set
even higher for a second raze and removal contract in Winnebago County
let in August. At a pre-bid meeting held at WisDOT's Northeast Region
office, DBE firms and other companies in the demolition industry learned
that a 20% DBE goal had been set for the $277,000 project. The contract
to remove buildings on eight parcels near the US 45/US 41 interchange
was awarded to RLAM, Inc. from Ripon. The US 41 project is the largest
road construction project in the Northeast Region's history. Traffic
lanes will be added to 31-miles of highway; 16 interchanges will be
improved and 45 roundabouts will be built. Construction on mainline US
41 starts next fall on the Lake Butte des Morts Causeway.
