First I-94 contract meets DBE goal, other lettings on the way

One project ends, another begins, but DBE opportunities are still at the forefront as WisDOT transitions from the Marquette Interchange to the I-94 North-South Corridor project in southeast Wisconsin.

As final contracts were signed and the Governor cut the ribbon on the Marquette Interchange, WisDOT executed its first construction contract for the I-94 North-South Corridor project. C.W. Purpero, Incorporated, of Milwaukee, earned the prime bid of just under $284,000 for a stream relocation project near I-94 and County Highway G in Racine County. The bid includes a DBE subcontracting share of 20.5%, meeting the goal of 20% assigned to the letting, with four DBE subcontractors involved on the project:

  • Erosion Control Specialties, Dalton;
  • M-Squared Engineering, LLC, Cedarburg;
  • Mega Rentals, Madison; and
  • E.J. Meyer Trucking, Milwaukee.

The I-94 North-South Corridor project calls for a total investment of $1.9 billion to rebuild, redesign and expand the freeway from the Illinois state line north to the Mitchell Interchange area in Milwaukee by the end of 2016. Major construction will begin in Kenosha and Milwaukee counties in early 2009. Preliminary work on the I-94 North-South Corridor project will continue this fall, including these anticipated projects:

  • WisDOT let two projects for local street / traffic mitigation improvements in Milwaukee County on August 28. Results of these lettings will be announced in the next edition of the DBE Contracting Update.
  • The department expects to let another contract on the corridor this year to relocate a water main. The Highway Construction Contract Information (HCCI) site will have project and bidding details.

Contractors can also get information about the next two years of anticipated projects at the I-94 workshop to be held on October 1 in Milwaukee (see related article for details).
