Marquette Interchange to open early and under budget
"The Marquette Interchange project is the largest transportation construction project in state history and we are getting it done early and under budget. This is great news for Wisconsin taxpayers and the traveling public," Governor Doyle said. "The city of Milwaukee is the center for culture and commerce in Wisconsin, and this key piece of infrastructure is an important addition to a thriving downtown." The Governor noted the continued focus on minority contracting and labor participation on the state's largest ever transportation project to-date. Through May 31, more than 70 different DBE contractors and consultants had earned more than $120 million in contracts on the project, a 19% share. More than 1,000 minority workers had filled over 470,000 construction hours, a 21% share of all hours worked. The Marquette Interchange Project also received an inaugural America's Transportation Award, a competition sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), AAA and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The project was recognized in the "Large project — on time" category for the Mississippi Valley Conference region of AASHTO. It will go on to compete against other projects for national recognition at the AASHTO annual meeting to be held this fall. |
