WisDOT signs Zoo Interchange study contract with 22% DBE share

As the Marquette Interchange work wraps up and the I-94 North-South Corridor sets up for construction in 2009, WisDOT is beginning to study the Zoo Interchange as the next southeast freeway reconstruction project. At the end of 2007, WisDOT signed a $7.7 million contract with the Forward 45 consortium to help the department on an environmental and engineering study of the interchange.

Zoo Interchange logoThe Zoo Interchange connects I-94, I-894 and US 45 in western Milwaukee County near the Milwaukee County Zoo. It is Wisconsin's busiest interchange, handling more than 340,000 vehicles per day. It opened to traffic in 1963 and plays a key role in moving commuters, retail customers, health care patients, trucks and other travelers to commercial and institutional sites.

No decisions have been made for the ultimate design or for property impacts of a Zoo Interchange reconstruction project. The comprehensive environmental and engineering study will examine the interchange, determine traffic and infrastructure needs, evaluate alternatives, identify positive and negative impacts of the alternatives, and present a preferred alternative. WisDOT is beginning the study process in anticipation of reconstruction to begin in 2012.

The Forward 45 team is led by CH2M Hill, HNTB and Kapur and Associates. The following 13 DBE firms will account for $1.7 million of the contract, a 22.5% share:

  • 4N Consultants, Madison
  • Abrazo Multicultural Marketing, Milwaukee
