The State of Wisconsin has reciprocal registration agreements with the Indian tribes and bands indicated below, in accordance with section 341.409, Wisconsin Statutes. The agreements are similar to those with other states, and they provide for unrestricted operation in both jurisdictions by vehicles registered in either jurisdiction. License plates are issued by Wisconsin Indian tribes and bands to members who reside on the reservation. Some tribes also issue registration to non-members who reside on the reservation. This information is included here to assist users of this guide.
Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians
Tribe began issuing plates on October 1, 2006. Bad River Band tribal plates display registered owner information only on DMV and "TIME" system inquiries. Both registration and vehicle records are on file with the Bad River Tribal Court and Ashland County Sheriff's Dept.

Tribe began issuing plates in January 1994. Lac du Flambeau tribal plates display registered owner information only on DMV and "TIME" system inquires. Both registration and vehicle records are on file with the Lac du Flambeau Tribal Court State Patrol offices in Eau Claire and Wausau, the Minocqua Police Dept. and the Vilas County Sherriff's Dept.

Tribe began issuing plates in 1984. Menominee tribal plates display registered owner information only on DMV and "TIME" system inquires. Both registration and vehicle records are on file with the Menominee Licensing and Permit Department and the Menominee Tribal Police Department.

Oneida Indian Tribe of Wisconsin
Tribe began issuing plates on February 22, 1999. Oneida tribal plates display both customer and vehicle information on DMV and "TIME" system inquires. Both registration and vehicle records are on file with the Oneida Compliance Division, the Oneida Police Department, Brown and Outagamie County Sheriff’s Departments and Ashwaubenon, DePere and Green Bay Police Departments.

First issued August, 2004, the larger outlined rectangle on the bottom is for a decal. This decal will identify the plate holder as being a member of the "Wolf Clan," "Bear Clan" or "Turtle Clan". Applicants will be given their choice of the design they want when they apply.

Both registration and vehicle records are on file with the Red Cliff Tribal Administration, Red Cliff Police Department, State Patrol office in Spooner, Bayfield County Sheriff’s Department and Ashland County Sheriff’s Department.
