Cornerstone Driving School closed

Cornerstone Driving School in Appleton closed its doors and may be filing bankruptcy. If you are a student impacted by the closing, unfortunately, you may need to look for different options to complete driver's education requirements.

DMV is working to get your records and send you helpful information

  • DMV requested all of Cornerstone Driving School’s student records which will indicate the current status of your training.

  • If you have not completed all the requirements of driver training, DMV will send you a letter and a copy of your record. This letter will provide information and options that are available.

  • If you hold a completed application form (MV3001) for an instructional permit, signed by Cornerstone, you may still apply for an instructional permit at DMV. However, as required by law, you will have to sign up with another school for behind-the-wheel training that starts within 60 days. You must have a copy of your record to do this. DMV is working as quickly as possible to get it to you.

  • DMV is contacting other private driving schools in the area to inform them of this situation. We will encourage and recommend that these schools make a concerted effort to accommodate you. Other driving schools can be found at http://www.dot.wi.gov/drivers/teens/cdschools.htm.

Options available to you if you have paid for but did not receive services

  • Take your documentation provided by DMV to another driving school of your choice. This school can work with you to determine what requirements have yet to be met. Full credit should be given for all documented and verified course work done with Cornerstone Driving School. If you choose to attend a new school for the remainder of the required training, you will be responsible for any fees associated with the training.

  • If we receive no documentation regarding completion of some requirements that you believe were completed, you should contact the DMV DTS Coordinator at dotdrvrtrnschool@dot.wi.gov to determine if there is alternative documentation you could submit to substantiate completion of your training.

  • You should request a refund by contacting Cornerstone Driving School.

  • If you are unable to obtain a refund directly from the school, you may choose to contact the school's bond company, CNA Surety Company, at 1-888-866-2666, and file a claim. In order to file the claim, you will need to provide a description of what occurred and supporting documentation. You will also need to reference the bond #70221750 in your request.

    • Email: claimmes@cnasurety.com
    • Fax: (605) 977-7724
    • Address: CNA Surety Company
    • P.O. Box 5077
    • Sioux Falls, SD 57117-5077
  • If you are unable to recover all or some of the money you paid for services that were not delivered, an option may be to pursue reimbursement through small claims court in your county.

  • If you have difficulties getting a refund after exhausting these efforts, you may choose to report your difficulty to the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection at 1-800-422-7128 or http://datcp.wi.gov/Consumer/Consumer_Complaints/index.aspx.

  • For additional questions, or if you wish to file an official complaint with DMV regarding this driver training school, please email the DTS Coordinator at dotdrvrtrnschool@dot.wi.gov.
