Wisconsin Interstate events

Between June 15 - 29, 2006, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) held a 50th Interstate anniversary "Re-enactment Route" that mirrored, in reverse, Dwight Eisenhower's 1919 military convoy trip. Eisenhower's 3,250-mile voyage took about two months' time at an average speed of 6 m.p.h. Today, the same trip takes just under a week traveling eight hours per day at 65 m.p.h. AASHTO's journey began in San Francisco, CA, and followed I-80 east across the country, arriving in Washington, D.C. on June 29.

Wisconsin Department of Transportation Secretary Frank Busalacchi hosted a media event Wednesday, June 28, 2006 at the Goerke’s Corners Park and Ride to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Interstate system and the beginning of Interstate construction in Wisconsin. Wisconsin began Interstate construction near Goerke’s Corners in 1956 and officially opened the 7-mile segment of I-94 in 1958.
