The Wisconsin Department of Transportation Library is located on the first floor (Room 100) of the Hill Farms State Office Building, 4802 Sheboygan Avenue, Madison, Wisconsin, 53707. The library is open to the general public.

Interlibrary loans and borrowing

The WisDOT Library openly lends its materials to all institutions who are members of an interlibrary loan network. If you would like to borrow an item from the WisDOT Library, you must place an Interlibrary Loan (ILL) request through your local library. In turn, your library places the request with the WisDOT Library and is responsible for the safe return of borrowed materials.   For more information on this network, please visit the Online Computer Library Catalog's (OCLC) Interlibrary Loan page.  If your local library is not a member of OCLC, please ask for an American Library Association's (ALA) Interlibrary Loan form, which can be mailed or faxed to the WisDOT Library.  Direct loans from the WisDOT Library are handled on a case by case basis.

Borrowing for WisDOT staff
WisDOT staff may borrow items not owned by the WisDOT Library through our membership in the OCLC Interlibrary Loan network.  This network includes university, large public and corporate libraries and many of these loans can be obtained at little or no cost.  Items available to borrow include books, CDs, DVDs, reports, videos and journal articles.  If you have a item you would like the library to borrow for you, please contact us and provide as much information about the item as possible (i.e. book or journal article title, author, year published)

Loan period
The loan period for items borrowed from the WisDOT Library is one month, which is renewable unless another patron has placed a hold on the item.

Holds
Whenever a person wishes to borrow an item which is already on loan, that person may request that library staff place a "hold" on that item. When the item is returned to the library, the staff will notify the person requesting the item and "hold" the item at the library.  Please contact the library to place a hold.

Reference services and document delivery

WisDOT Library staff is available to provide answers to reference questions received from the general public.   Due to the sometimes heavy volume or in-depth nature of the questions, please allow for a reasonable amount of time for a response.

Visitors to the WisDOT Library may use public access Internet terminals to download materials or access Web sites for transportation research purposes.  Photocopying of journal articles and sections of reports is allowed provided the amount is not voluminous.  In accordance with national copyright laws, only one copy of a journal article or book/report section is allowed for research purposes only, and may not be resold or reused for profit or other reasons.
