Rural and Small Urban Area Public Transportation Assistance

WisDOT receives and processes the applications for transit service operators seeking to receive state operating assistance. Applicants who are in an urbanized area (population 50,000 or above (and are typically eligible to receive Mass Transit Operating Assistance aid under Wisconsin Tier A-1, A-2 or B) should first apply to WisDOT for state operating assistance. Once the state approves of the application and officially notifies the applicant of the amount of federal and state aid it is due to receive, the applicant can directly apply to the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) if they wish to receive funds under federal Section 5307.

The Rural and Small Urban Area Public Transportation Assistance program allocates federal funds to local public bodies or Native American tribes. These funds under Federal Section 5311 support capital and operating expenses for public transportation services that are scheduled for and operated in non-urbanized areas (population between 2,500 and 50,000). The State Management Plan PDF explains how WisDOT administers these federal funds.

The following application materials for 2013 are now available.
