January 5, 2012
Route expected to be signed in 2014
(Green Bay) The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Northeast Region in Green Bay is announcing the US 41 interstate conversion project website is now available at www.41conversion.wi.gov.
This effort is part of the federal transportation program Safe Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU) enacted 2005, that designated 142 miles of US 41, from Milwaukee to Green Bay as a future interstate route.
Designating the highway as an Interstate is expected to:
- Bring economic growth along US 41 from Milwaukee to Green Bay
- Increase safety for people and vehicles on the roadway
- Create a corridor identity
The project schedule calls for WisDOT to begin shielding or placing interstate signs along the route by fall 2014. A final interstate route number has not been designated.
