Project set to begin on I-43 in Waukesha County
February 7, 2012
Crews are set to roll out the orange barrels later next week on several projects on I-43 in Waukesha County, announced the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT).
Work will take place on the following segments of I-43:
- Seven miles of I-43 southbound only between WIS 83 and WIS 164, February 15 through fall (Northbound work will take place in 2013.)
- I-43 over Martin Road bridges, February 20 through fall
- Five miles of I-43 in both directions between WIS 164 and Moorland Road, late February/early March through fall
Last resurfaced in the early 1990s, the pavement is in need of repair. This project will resurface the roadway, providing a better riding surface and also rehabilitate bridge structures.
Construction will be staged to keep most lanes open during peak drive times. Lanes will be restricted during off-peak (9 a.m.to 2 p.m.) and at night (9 p.m. to 6 a.m.). To perform bridge structure work, ramps will close short-term at WIS 83 and at WIS 164, although not consecutively. Signs will indicate detour routes during these weekend closures. Martin Road/County U over I-43 will close beginning February 20 through October to accomplish bridge widening and improvements.
The contractor, Payne and Dolan of Waukesha, plans to finish projects prior to Thanksgiving 2012.
The segment between WIS 164 and Moorland Road was awarded at $9.6 million, the Martin Road bridges at $3.5 million and the WIS 83 to WIS 164 segment is $11.8 million. These projects are paid for with a mix of federal and state funds.
Motorists are advised to plan ahead and expect delays during off-peak hours.
