WisDOT announces I-43/I-94 and Becher Street bridge solution
March 22, 2012
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) will move forward with a plan to demolish the Becher Street on-ramp bridge to I-43/I-94 northbound in Milwaukee County. The bridge was closed early last week after a concerning bridge inspection.
"Replacing this structure with a new asphalt ramp is the best long-term solution," said Brian Bliesner. "WisDOT will undertake an aggressive schedule to begin work in the next two weeks and finish by the end of April, weather permitting."
Crews will remove the bridge structure, bring in fill and pave over the fill to construct the new ramp. Preliminary cost estimates are under $1 million. Work in this location was previously scheduled for 2013.
An expedited bid-let process will be used to select a contractor to perform the work under an emergency contract.
The ramp, which serves 5,000 vehicles per day, will remain closed until the project is complete.
