Governor Walker approves WIS 13 improvements in Marathon County

April 19, 2012

As part of his efforts to create jobs and make sure Wisconsin is open for business, Governor Scott Walker recently signed an $8.3 million contract to improve approximately two miles of WIS 13 from West North Street in the city of Colby to Linden Street in the city of Abbotsford.

Construction is scheduled to begin as early as Monday, April 30. Construction is scheduled for completion by mid-November 2012.

James Peterson Sons, Inc. is the prime contractor for the project. Improvements include:

  • Reconstructing WIS 13 to a new urban, four-lane divided roadway. The center median will consist of either a two-way left-turn-lane or a raised median.
  • Widening the intersection of Adams Street and WIS 13 to better accommodate turning vehicles. New traffic signals will be installed at the intersection.
  • Installing new railroad signals and gates at the crossing located on Adams Street, west of WIS 13.
  • Constructing a new 5-foot-wide sidewalk along the full length of the corridor on the east side of the roadway. A second sidewalk will also be constructed on the west side of the roadway between the WIS 29 ramps and Linden Street. The outside travel lanes will increase in width from 12 feet to 14 feet to better accommodate bicyclists.
  • Upgrading the intersections of WIS 13 and the WIS 29 ramps to include wider and longer turn lanes along with new traffic signals and lights.
  • Installing new, continuous street lighting.

During construction, WIS 13 will remain open to traffic. Improvements will be completed in several stages by restricting traffic to two lanes. The project will be paid with a combination of federal, state and local transportation funds.
