First-ever National Bike to School Day is May 9

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) encourages students to pedal to school on Wednesday, May 9, which has been declared National Bike to School Day.

"Wisconsin students will join other students across the county to raise awareness about this healthy mode of transportation," said Renee Callaway, WisDOT’s Safe Routes to School coordinator. "Parents are urged to bike with their children to promote safe bicycling habits."

Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programs encourage children in grades K-8 to walk and bike to school by creating safer walking and biking routes. These programs improve walking and biking travel options, promote healthier lifestyles in children at an early age, and decrease auto-related emissions near schools.

"National Bike to School Day helps promote SRTS’s mission," added Callaway. "Since 2007, WisDOT has awarded nearly $13.5 million for 130 SRTS projects around the state."

Organized events are planned at several Wisconsin schools on May 9; however, all students, who can safely and conveniently bike to school, are welcome to be part of this national day of biking.
