Governor Walker approves more than $1.5 million project at Sawyer County Airport

Governor Scott Walker today announced a $1,539,631 project to design site improvements and navigational aid equipment, as well as acquire land for the expansion of the Sawyer County Airport.

Matt Malicki, airport development engineer with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), said the project includes design plans for a taxiway parallel to the primary runway, expansion of an apron, relocation of a town road and an Instrument Landing System (ILS). Additional land is needed for the new town road and components of the ILS navigational aid system.

The project is scheduled to begin this spring and should be completed by November 2012.

Funding Breakdown

  • State = $38,491
  • Sawyer County = $38,491
  • Federal Aviation Administration = $1,462,649

The Sawyer County Airport is located about two miles northeast of Hayward. It has one paved runway and one turf runway.
