Third public meeting scheduled for WIS 116 bridge in Winneconne
May 11, 2012
Preferred alternative being presented at this meeting
(Green Bay) The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Northeast Region in Green Bay is announcing the third public information meeting to present WisDOT’s preferred alternative for the WIS 116 (Main Street) bridge crossing the Wolf River in the village of Winneconne. The meeting will be held Thursday, May 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Winneconne Elementary School, 233 South Third Street, Winneconne in the cafeteria. A brief presentation will be made at 6:05 p.m.
The meeting is being held in an open house format and the public is encouraged to attend at their convenience, provide input and ask questions concerning this project. WisDOT representatives will be available to discuss the project on an individual basis.
WisDOT initiated a study in 2009 to develop and evaluate a range of potential WIS 116 Wolf River crossing alternatives in Winneconne that would address the 77-year old structure as it nears the end of its service life. At the meeting, department staff will announce the recommended crossing alternative that will meet existing and future needs. The study will conclude in 2013.
A historical report was prepared for the WIS 116 Wolf River Bridge in 2011 that included a Determination of Eligibility (DOE) examining whether the bridge was eligible to be added to the National Register of Historic Places (NHRP). The State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) concluded that the bridge is not eligible and on June 8, 2011, SHPO signed the Section 106 form stating that the Wolf River Bridge is not historic.
Citizens who are unable to attend the meeting, or would like more information, can contact Robert Wagner at (920) 492-5983. Written comments regarding the study can be mailed to Robert Wagner, WisDOT, 944 Vanderperren Way, Green Bay, WI 54304.
