Governor Walker approves I-39 southbound improvements in Marquette County

As part of his efforts to create jobs and make sure Wisconsin is open for business, Governor Scott Walker recently signed a $2.6 million contract to improve 5.6 miles of southbound I-39 between Marquette County D and the south Marquette County line, in the towns of Moundville, Oxford and Packwaukee.

Construction is scheduled to begin August 6, 2012.

Planned improvements

D.L. Gasser Construction is the prime contractor for the project. Crews will resurface the southbound lanes of I-39. Other improvements include:

• Bridge deck overlays at the County D bridge over I-39
• Bridge deck overlays on the I-39 bridges over County CX, WIS 23 and County O.
• Ramp gates will be installed at the WIS 23 entrance ramps to northbound and southbound I-39. The ramp gates will provide access control during inclement weather or traffic incidents.
• New beam guards at the bridges.

Traffic impacts

• During construction, motorists on southbound I-39 will encounter weekday, single lane closures. From late September to mid-October, the lane closures will remain in place through the weekends so crews can complete the bridge deck overlays.
• The speed limit will be reduced to 55 miles per hour when lanes are closed.
• The County D bridge will be closed to traffic between August 6 and August 24, while crews overlay the bridge deck. No detour will be signed for the closure. The ramps to I-39 will remain open to traffic.

Construction is scheduled for completion by late October 2012.

Ninety percent of the project will be paid with federal transportation funds; the remaining 10 percent will be paid with state transportation funds.

Motorists should slow down, use caution and stay alert when driving through construction zones. To avoid delays, consider taking an alternative route and avoid peak travel periods.
