Public information meeting scheduled for US 2 Bong Bridge and approaches

July 23, 2012

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) will hold a second public information meeting on Thursday, August 2, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College Conference Center, located at 600 North 21st Street, Superior, to discuss plans for the rehabilitation of the US 2 Bong Bridge and approaches. The project begins at the intersection of US 2 and Belknap Street and ends prior to W. Michigan Street in Minnesota. The project is located within the city of Superior, Wisconsin and the city of Duluth, Minnesota. This meeting will follow an informal open house format and will present project displays and concepts for public review and comment. A short presentation will be made at 5:30 p.m.

This public information meeting is an opportunity to review and comment on the proposed improvements that will rehabilitate the Bong Bridge and replace pavement on US 2 and Belknap Street. Rehabilitation of the Bong Bridge includes milling and overlaying the deck, replacement of structural joints, painting of the truss, lighting upgrades, and sidewalk maintenance. Approach work on the Wisconsin side will include pavement replacement on US 2 to Belknap Street and Belknap Street from Pennsylvania Avenue to the Belknap Street viaduct, including intersection improvements involving a roundabout. Minimal approach work will be done on the Minnesota approach.

Traffic control staging options along with project timelines will be discussed at this meeting. If you have questions or concerns that may assist in the development of this project, we encourage you to attend this meeting. Persons with an interest in, or knowledge about, historical and archaeological resources in the project area are invited to present such information at the meeting.

Representatives from WisDOT and its project consultant, Ayres Associates Inc., will be on hand to answer questions and discuss project specifics. For information about the project or the public information meeting, contact WisDOT’s Project Manager, Matt Dickenson at (715) 395-3022.
