Greenfield Avenue (WIS 59) project to start in Milwaukee County

August 10, 2012

After the cream puffs are gone at the Wisconsin State Fair, construction will begin on Greenfield Avenue (WIS 59) from 124th Street to 106th Street starting August 13, 2012.

The 1.2-mile project will resurface the pavement and make intersection improvements. Greenfield Avenue will be open to traffic with lane restrictions. Crews will work on the inside lanes first, transitioning to the outside lanes later this fall. Utility work is underway now. Other project enhancements include:

  • Adding left turn lanes, extending existing turn lanes at 108th Street (WIS 100) intersection.
  • Extending existing turn lanes at 124th Street and 116th Street intersections.
  • Improving traffic signals at 108th Street, 116th Street and 124th Street.
  • Converting existing parking lanes to bicycle lanes.
  • Improving pedestrian and transit facilities.

Access to area businesses will be maintained throughout construction.

This $4.7 million project is being coordinated in advance of the Zoo Interchange project to ensure that vital alternate routes will serve the public during major reconstruction work from 2015-2018. Other traffic coordination projects will take place in 2012 and 2013 on Wisconsin Avenue, WIS 100, 84th Street/Glenview Avenue, Cleveland Avenue bridge and the eastern segment of Greenfield Avenue from 106th Street to 97th Street, including the bridge and ramps. For a complete schedule of Zoo Interchange projects, visit www.zoointerchange@wi.gov.

The contractor, Payne and Dolan, will finish work in November, weather permitting.
