Governor Walker approves southbound I-39/US 51 improvements in Rothschild
August 10, 2012
As part of his efforts to create jobs and make sure Wisconsin is open for business, Governor Scott Walker recently signed a $12.2 million contract to improve 1.9 miles of southbound I-39/US 51 between Business 51 and Foxglove Road in Marathon County.
Construction is scheduled to begin in September 2012.
Lunda Construction Company is the prime contractor for the project. Crews will reconstruct the southbound I-39/US 51 lanes just south of the Business 51 interchange to north of Foxglove Road. The I-39/US 51 structure over Business 51 will be replaced and widened. The structure over the Wisconsin River will be re-decked and widened.
During 2012, lane closures will be required to reconstruct sections of the southbound lanes of I-39/US 51. Crews will also construct temporary crossovers and begin work on the structure over the Wisconsin River.
In 2013, southbound I-39/US 51 traffic will be shifted to the northbound lanes. The freeway will remain open two lanes in each direction during peak hours. The northbound ramp from Business 51 will be closed from approximately mid-April through August.
During spring 2014, motorists can expect lane closures on northbound I-39/US 51.
Construction is scheduled for completion in May 2014.
Ninety percent of the project will be paid with federal transportation funds; the remaining 10 percent will be paid with state transportation funds.
