Governor Walker approves more than $640,000 project at Sparta/Fort McCoy Airport

September 12, 2012

Governor Scott Walker today announced a $640,353 project for the design and construction of T-hangars and the installation of new approach lighting at the Sparta/Fort McCoy Airport in Monroe County.

Andrew Trimble, airport development engineer with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), said the additional T-hangars will allow more owners to lease space to store their aircraft. The Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) lights will help pilots safely approach and land at the airport.

The project is scheduled to begin this summer and be completed by fall 2013.

Funding Breakdown

  • State = $2,817
  • City of Sparta = $37,536
  • Federal Aviation Administration = $600,000

The Sparta/Fort McCoy airport is located three miles outside of Sparta on the Fort McCoy complex, which is owned by the U.S. Army. The airport has two paved runways.
