Greenfield Avenue (WIS 59) water main project set to begin in West Allis
September 14, 2012
Work coordinated in advance of the Zoo Interchange project
Crews begin work early next week on a project to relocate a water main facility on WIS 59 between 101st Street to 97th Street in the city of West Allis, announced the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT).
This $376,000 contract is coordinated with the Zoo Interchange reconstruction project. Relocating the water main off of the bridge this year allows crews to start demolition in early 2013 to construct a new bridge and ramps at Greenfield Avenue over I-894/US 45. The new bridge and ramps are slated to open in time for the 2013 Wisconsin State Fair.
Traffic lanes will be open during construction with intermittent shoulder and sidewalk closures on the north side of WIS 59 from 96th Street to 100th Street. Sidewalk that connects from the corner of Madison Place and 100th Street to WIS 59 will be closed long-term. Pedestrians will be re-routed on the sidewalk west to 101st Street, north to Madison Place and east to 100th Street (Graphic of this closure available in the newsroom section of the Zoo Interchange website). Access to businesses and area residents will be maintained.
On Tuesday, September 18, the I-894/US 45 eastbound exit ramp to Greenfield Avenue will close between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. During the same time period, the I-894/US 45 westbound on-ramp at will be closed as well. Throughout the project, intermittent nighttime closures of entrance and exit ramps will occur at the I-894/US 45 and WIS 59 interchange. Motorists are advised to watch the signs in the area and be aware of pedestrians.
The contractor, Globe Contractors of Pewaukee, WI, is expected to complete work by middle of November.
Adjacent project: Construction is progressing on the WIS 59 project between 124th Street to 106th Street. Work includes resurfacing the pavement and improving intersections. The intersection at WIS 100 will restrict some lane and turning movements at night beginning the week of September 17. Greenfield Avenue remains open with lane restrictions and is on schedule to complete in November, weather permitting.
Zoo Interchange Coordination: Other Zoo Interchange traffic coordination projects will take place in 2012 and 2013 on Wisconsin Avenue, WIS 100, 84th Street/Glenview Avenue, Cleveland Avenue bridge and the eastern segment of Greenfield Avenue from 106th Street to 97th Street, including the bridge and ramps.
