“Wisconsin Lake Superior Scenic Byway” becomes fourth scenic byway in the state

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) today announced the approval of the state’s fourth scenic byway. The “Wisconsin Lake Superior Scenic Byway” is a 70 mile route of WIS 13 from US 2 to County H in northwest Wisconsin.

The Wisconsin Lake Superior Scenic Byway delivers stunning views of Lake Superior combined with forested areas. The route provides access to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, Northwest Wildlife Refuge lands and the Chequamegon National Forest. The route include the cities of Bayfield and Washburn; the Red Cliff Tribal lands; the towns of Barksdale, Bayfield, Bayview, Bell, Clover, Cloverland, Orienta, Port Wing and Russell; and the unincorporated areas of Cornucopia, Herbster and Port Wing.

"The individuals, local governments and organizations that supported the designation of WIS 13 as a Wisconsin scenic byway are to be commended," said WisDOT Secretary Mark Gottlieb, who officially designated the scenic byway. "Their vision, initiative and perseverance will help promote a treasure found right here in Wisconsin."

Wisconsin’s Scenic Byways Program is a cooperative effort between local communities and WisDOT to identify, promote and enhance some of the most scenic and historic state highway corridors. Communities along the route are now eligible to apply for National Scenic Byway designation for additional recognition at the national level, including the ability to compete for federal grants and create marketing materials to promote the scenic byway.

Started in 2005, the Wisconsin Scenic Byways Program has designated three other scenic byways – Door County Coastal Byway (which includes WIS 42 and WIS 57); Great River Road National Scenic Byway (WIS 35); and Lower Wisconsin River Road (WIS 60).
