Governor Walker approves $4.3 million project at General Mitchell International Airport

October 1, 2012

Governor Scott Walker today announced a $4.3 million project to improve aviation safety by constructing a secured perimeter roadway system around General Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee.

Wendy Hottenstein, airport development engineer with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), said the project includes a perimeter road bridge over Howell Avenue and a perimeter road extension from the 128th Air Refueling Wing to College Avenue. The project will allow airport support vehicles to access all areas of the airfield without having to cross taxiways and runways or travel on public streets.

The project is scheduled to be completed by summer 2013.

Funding Breakdown

  • State = $537,500
  • Milwaukee County = $537,500
  • Federal Aviation Administration = $3,225,000

General Mitchell International Airport has five hard-surfaced runways. More information on Wisconsin’s largest airport can be found on the World Wide Web.
