WisDOT announces changes to Marquette Interchange

November 5, 2012

Second westbound lane from Downtown to reopen

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Southeast Region is announcing plans to re-establish the second lane of traffic westbound from I-794 to I-94. The lane will be re-established to address the congestion along I-794.

Reconfiguration of lanes in the Marquette Interchange took place earlier this year to address operational and safety concerns along I-43 and the ramp to I-94. While those changes provided improvements in the target areas, they have resulted in delays and challenging merging movements in other parts of the interchange, specifically along I-794 westbound.

The department’s plan will allow a second lane to be re-established by adding an auxiliary lane westbound from the Marquette Interchange through the 35th Street Interchange. The auxiliary lane is in addition to the three current lanes of traffic along that portion of the I-system. This lane will improve the operation of I-794 westbound while maintaining the improvements along I-43 southbound into and through the ramp to westbound I-94.

Work to add the auxiliary lane will begin in March and will be completed in May 2013.

A public information meeting will take place in mid-December to give the public the opportunity to see the proposed changes and provide comment.

The department appreciates the input and patience from the motorists using I-794. WisDOT places a high priority on providing a safe and efficient transportation system. The work to add an auxiliary lane will result in a safer and more efficient roadway serving downtown and all the motorists using the Marquette Interchange.
