Public meeting set for I-94 East-West Corridor Study in Milwaukee County

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) invites the public to attend one of the public meetings set next week to discuss options for the I-94 East-West Corridor Study:

• December 5, 2012 4-7 p.m.
  State Fair Park, Tommy Thompson Youth Center, Gate #5
  640 S. 84th Street, Milwaukee
  MCTS Route 67
• December 6, 2012 4-7 p.m.
  Marquette University High School (use Henke Center entrance in parking lot on Michigan Street)
  3401 W. Wisconsin Avenue, Milwaukee
  MCTS Routes 10, 30, 35

The open house-style meeting will present the same information on both nights. Members of the project team will discuss initial concepts to improve the I-94 freeway and gather input from the community. Stop in at a time that is convenient.

The study involves a three-mile segment of I-94 between 70th Street and 25th Street. I-94 first opened to traffic in the early 1960s. The design is outdated, pavement and bridges need complete replacement and crashes are a serious issue.

The study team has spent the last several months meeting with the community and analyzing a wide range of options for the complex I-94 freeway system in this segment. Some options to be discussed at the public meetings include:

• Replacing I-94 as it exists today
• Making limited safety improvements in spot locations
• Using collector distributor roads (parallel lanes or ramps within the freeway right-of-way)
• Adding frontage roads parallel to the freeway
• Improving local roads parallel to the freeway with limited access
• Separating merging traffic through elevated ramps
• Double-decking a portion of the freeway
• Adding lanes

No decisions have been made regarding improvements or changes to freeway access in the corridor. The study team is very early in the process and cost information associated with preliminary options is not yet available.
