Major Zoo Interchange reconstruction work begins on Greenfield Avenue

The first major contract for the Zoo Interchange reconstruction project begins the week of January 21 to remove and replace the WIS 59 (Greenfield Avenue) bridge over I-894/US 45.

Beginning midweek of January 21, Greenfield Avenue will be closed to through traffic between 106th Street and 96th Street. The roadway from 97th to 98th Street and 101st to 106th Street will be under construction and open to local traffic/businesses only. The eastbound on-ramp to northbound US 45 and the eastbound/westbound on-ramp to southbound US 45 will also close the week of January 21. The project will:

• Reconstruct Greenfield Avenue from 106th Street to 97th Street.
• Construct a new wider bridge over I-894/US 45.
• Eliminate the eastbound to northbound loop entrance ramp.
• Add two left turn lanes at each of the freeway entrance ramps.

Full freeway closures will be necessary to demolish the bridge. More information on these impacts will be made available soon.

Access to businesses and residences within the closure area will be maintained at all times. Watch for construction business signage and special promotions by the business community. Through traffic should use 84th Street, Lincoln Avenue, and WIS 100 as alternate routes.

The contractor, Zignego Companies, is scheduled to finish the project by late August. The bridge will re-open for the Wisconsin State Fair.

This $15 million project is being coordinated in advance of the Zoo Interchange project to ensure that vital alternate routes will serve the public during major reconstruction work. Other Zoo Interchange projects will take place this year on WIS 100, 84th Street/Glenview Avenue and the Cleveland Avenue bridge.
