Merrimac ferry open for the season

April 12, 2013

At least there is one sign of spring: The Colsac III, the ferry that serves as WIS 113 to shuttle motorists across the Wisconsin River between Sauk and Columbia counties, has begun operations for the 2013 season.

The ferry is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week between Okee and Merrimac. The craft holds 15 vehicles at a time in addition to bicycles and pedestrians. A single crossing takes about seven minutes.

In 2012 the ferry made more than 48,000 trips carrying more than 280,000 vehicles. It is Wisconsin's only free ferry.

The ferry will operate until ice forms on the river, presumably later in the year.
