Governor Walker approves WIS 23 improvements in Sheboygan County
April 21, 2014
Work set to begin Thursday, April 24
As part of his efforts to create jobs and make sure Wisconsin is open for business, Governor Scott Walker recently approved approximately $2 million to improve the WIS 23/County Y interchange in Sheboygan County. Work is beginning Thursday, April 24. Vinton Construction Company, Manitowoc, WI is the prime contractor.
Work for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Northeast Region project includes replacement of concrete pavement on all four ramps and on County Y between the ramp termini, painting of the bridge steel, and concrete overlay of the existing bridge deck.
There will be traffic impacts during this construction. This project is being constructed in two stages:
- During both stages, WIS 23 and County Y may be reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction at times.
- During stage 1, both the WIS 23 westbound and eastbound off-ramps to County Y will be closed, and alternative routes to the village of Kohler will be posted. Also during stage 1, both north and southbound County Y traffic will be moved to the east half of the existing County Y median, while the west half is closed for construction.
- During stage 2 beginning approximately mid-June, both the WIS 23 westbound and eastbound on-ramps from County Y will be closed, and County Y traffic will be moved to the west half of the existing County Y median while the east half is constructed.
Please note that concurrent with WisDOT’s construction, the village of Kohler has a project on Highland Drive south of the department’s project and Sheboygan County has a project on County Y north of it.
This project will replace the deteriorating pavement, providing a better safer driving surface. The bridge painting will help preserve the integrity of the bridge structure. The project is scheduled for completion July 30, 2014.
Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes and use caution when driving through this or any work zone.
