La Crosse facility to promote tourism with space for Convention and Visitors Bureau
Governor Scott Walker today announced the Wisconsin Department of Transportation will construct a new rest area along I-90 near the state border in La Crosse to replace an aging facility.
The new rest area will be built in 2016 in coordination with planned I-90 reconstruction. The facility will continue to provide space for the state Department of Tourism and the La Crosse Area Convention and Visitors Bureau and other area tourism organizations to assist travelers and provide information on state and local tourism attractions.
"This investment in a new rest area provides a safe place for travelers to stop, and also offers us an opportunity to showcase our great state, and strengthen our commitment to promoting travel and tourism in the beautiful La Crosse area and statewide," said Governor Scott Walker.
Visitors to the rest area are welcomed by staff year-round from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, with weekend hours from Memorial Day through October.
The current rest area opened in 1977 and includes rest rooms, vending machines, recycling bins and picnic and pet exercise areas. There is also a short scenic trail with views of the Mississippi River.
