US 12 (WIS 26-Whitewater) Corridor - Environmental documents

Note - WisDOT has stopped all work on the study of a future US 12 Bypass through the town of Koshkonong south of Fort Atkinson. The final disposition of the study will be determined at a future date by the Transportation Projects Commission. (May 3, 2012)

Environmental Impact Statement (EIS)

Once sufficient need to make improvements to US 12 in the Fort Atkinson area was established, WisDOT began developing an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).

Final EIS (FEIS)

FEIS will be prepared that will address comments received on the Draft EIS (DEIS). This document will also describe results of additional study of the southern bypass routes and interim improvements conducted from 2008 - 2011.

Publication of the FEIS is tentatively scheduled in early 2012. The details of WisDOT’s preferred alternative, including benefits and impacts, will be documented in the FEIS.

The FEIS will be available for public review for 30 days, after which the Federal Highway Administration can choose to release a Record of Decision, which would grant final approval of the selected alternative.

Record of Decision (ROD)

ROD is needed before the selected alternative may proceed to final design and construction.

Once the ROD is filed, then official mapping process can begin. WisDOT anticipates mapping to be completed by 2013. An interim improvement of existing US 12 is anticipated to be constructed 2016.

Draft EIS (DEIS)

The DEIS was published in Oct. 2005 and circulated for public and agency comment. It explains the "no-action" alternative for a project, as well as a number of possible "build" alternatives and their benefits and impacts. A public hearing was conducted on the DEIS in Dec. 2005.

Based upon the findings of the DEIS and upon agency and public comments, WisDOT selected a course of action that includes making interim improvements to the existing system and officially mapping a southern bypass route for construction at a later date.
