Note - WisDOT has stopped all work on the study of a future US 12 Bypass through the town of Koshkonong south of Fort Atkinson. The final disposition of the study will be determined at a future date by the Transportation Projects Commission. (May 3, 2012)

Highway projects are developed as a cooperative effort among the public, state and federal review agencies, and WisDOT.

Preparing a project like the US 12 expansion from concept to actual construction takes many years. Extensive effort is always made to keep the public involved and informed throughout all stages of development.

Special interest groups

Advisory committee (AC)

Public participation is at the forefront of the EIS process as solutions are explored. WisDOT formed the AC to review the progress of the EIS and continue to provide local perspective. The committee has conducted 12 meetings to date.

AC consists of:

Three city of Fort Atkinson representatives
Three town of Koshkonong representatives
One Rock County representative
Two Jefferson County representatives
Two town of Lima representatives
Two town of Milton representatives

Since the public hearing on the Draft EIS, WisDOT has held a number of meetings with agencies and local officials, property owners, businesses, and farmers to study the potential indirect and cumulative effects a bypass would have on the built and natural environment. A focus group meeting on this topic was also held with local experts and stakeholders.

Environmental justice (EJ)

WisDOT is committed to equity and fairness and wants to ensure no one is excluded from the US 12 project decision making process.

Identifying and addressing a disproportionately high number of adverse effects on minority, low-income, disabled or elderly individuals will help achieve EJ and promote nondiscrimination in the community.
