US 14 Reconstruction

All ramps are open at the US 14 and WIS 138 interchange.

Project overview

US 14 is an important route in and around the Madison metropolitan area. Between WIS 92 and County MM, the existing US 14 does not have the capacity or design to carry the rising traffic volumes in the area.

To address this issue, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) has multiple reconstruction projects planned on this section of US 14.

Current construction projects

  • US 14/WIS 138 Interchange Reconstruction and Construction - WisDOT is reconstructing the US 14/WIS 138 interchange and placement of roundabouts at the ramp terminals.
  • 2011, US 14 (US 12/18 and County MM) Resurfacing - WisDOT plans to resurface US 14 between US 12/18 and County MM to address existing pavement degradation.
  • 2011, Existing Lacy Road Overpass and McCoy Road Interchange Reconstruction (City of Fitchburg project) - The city of Fitchburg will be constructing a new full-diamond interchange located between the existing Lacy Road overpass and the McCoy Road interchange. In conjunction with the new interchange, the southerly ramps of McCoy Road interchange will be removed.

Future design projects

  • 2012 - Reconstruct the US 14/County MM interchange and the County MM and County M intersection.
    • To address existing pavement degradation along County MM and the poor Level of Service (LOS) at the intersection of County MM, at the US 14 ramp terminals, and at County M, WisDOT plans to reconstruct the US 14/County MM interchange and the County MM and County M intersection.
    • A roundabout will be placed at each ramp terminal and at the County M intersection.
  • On hold - US 14, between WIS 138 and WIS 92, will be reconstructed as a new two-lane, limited-access highway.
    • This section of roadway will be relocated onto right of way originally purchased in 1976.
    • At this time, this project design is on hold and it is unknown when it will move forward.

Completed projects

  • 2010 - City of Fitchburg resurfaced the 4-lane segment on McCoy Road in the interchange area.
  • 2009 - WisDOT expanded the existing US 14 from two to four lanes from County MM to WIS 138.
