Project overview

This study, as originally defined, included US 14 (Beltline), US 14 in Middleton to Todd Drive in Madison, and Verona Road, County PD to the Nakoma Road intersection.

For the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS), the study was split into three areas:

  • Verona Road, including the Beltline interchange
  • West Beltline mainline and interchanges
  • West Beltline grade separation additions

Focus for the re-analysis and Final EIS (FEIS) was reduced to Verona Road (US 18/151), from Nakoma Road to County PD, and the Beltline (US 12/14) portions immediately east and west, between Whitney Way and Todd Drive.

US 151 (Verona Road) is classified as a backbone route (Cornish Heritage) in the state transportation plan Corridors 2030. Backbone routes are the highest classification of route in Wisconsin. All interstates are classified as backbones too.

Corridors 2030 backbone routes, while comprising only three percent of Wisconsin's roadways, carry 34 percent of all auto travel and 57 percent of all truck travel. Backbone routes are generally connected to one another with system interchanges that have free-flow ramps to handle the large traffic volumes.

US 151 is the main highway link between southwestern Wisconsin and the state and national transportation system. US 151 is also a critical arterial for the Madison Metropolitan area and a gateway to both Fitchburg and Madison.

Growing traffic volumes on the portion between County PD and the Madison Beltline are compromising mobility, efficiency, and safety. This study seeks to address these concerns and in doing so preserve US 151’s function and ability to serve the diverse transportation needs of our community and state.

Subject to the completion of this study, reconstruction of the Verona Road/US 151 interchange and all other Stage 1 improvements would take place from 2013 to 2015.

Status/phase

Design work with construction scheduled for 2013.
