WIS 21 Planning Study - Need/purpose

Why the study is needed?

WIS 21 is an important route across Central Wisconsin connecting the city of Oshkosh (US 45) with the Sparta/La Crosse area (WIS 16/27/71) and is classified as an arterial facility serving regional transportation needs.

There is not a safety problem in the corridor yet, but some parts of the corridor have crash rates above the statewide average. In addition, WIS 21 is a “Connector” route in the WisDOT Connections 2030 Plan.

What the study does

This study provides a systematic approach to evaluating and determining the future locations of overpasses, interchanges, and any needed surface roads along the WIS 21 corridor between US 41 and Rivermoor Road in Winnebago County.

What the study means to citizens

The study will:

  • Allow citizens to stay informed about future improvements along the WIS 21 corridor.
  • Allow growth in the area according to the future transportation plans.
  • Help to keep lower the cost for future improvements, by preventing the need for the expensive acquisition of developed properties along the improvements.
