WIS 22 (Main St.), 10th St.-WIS 156 - Need/purpose

Why is this project needed?

  • The existing pavement on WIS 22 (Main Street) and the Pigeon River Bridge has reached the end of its service life.
  • The proposed project will reconstruct the roadway and replace the bridge.
  • To improve the safety and operations of the roadway WisDOT is planning to modify the intersection of WIS 22 and 12th Street and the intersection of WIS 22 and WIS 156/Green Tree Road.
  • Underground utilities and storm sewer also need to be replaced.

Purpose

  • Repair the existing deteriorated pavement, curb and gutter, sidewalks, and storm sewer.
  • Upgrade the intersection of Main St. and 12th St. to better accommodate turning trucks.
  • Upgrade the WIS 22/WIS156/Green Tree Rd. intersection to increase the intersectionís safety for the traveling public.

Proposed improvements

  • Replace the existing pavement on WIS 22 (Main St.) along with underground utilities and storm sewer.
  • Replace the existing WIS 22 bridge over the Pigeon River Bridge.
  • The WIS 22 intersections with WIS 156 and Green Tree Rd. currently have features that contribute to driver confusion and result in operational and safety concerns. Proposed improvements include:
    • Replacing the Pigeon River Bridge.
    • Replacing the existing pavement, curb and gutter, sidewalk, storm sewer, street lighting, and traffic signals.
    • Widening the roadway between the Pigeon River Bridge and 13th St. by approximately 0.5-1.5 feet on each side to accommodate both bike and parking lanes. Per the cityís decision, on-street parking will not be allowed on Pigeon River Bridge. The proposed roadway would consist of:
      • Two, 12 foot travel lanes
      • 5 foot to 6 foot bike lanes
      • 8 foot parking lanes (includes the 2 foot gutters)
      • 1.5-5 foot boulevards
      • 5 foot sidewalks
    • Widening the roadway between 13th St. and WIS 156 by 1 foot on each side to accommodate bike lanes. Per the cityís decision, on-street parking will not be allowed between 13th St. and WIS 156. The proposed section would consist of:
      • Two, 12 foot travel lanes
      • 5 foot bike lanes
      • 2 foot gutters
      • 5 foot to 9 foot boulevards
      • 5 foot sidewalks
      • Adding pedestrian bumpouts at intersections of Main St. and 11th St., Main
        St. and 12th St., and Main St. and 13th St.
  • Widening the Main St. and 12th St. intersection.
  • Realigning the intersection of 16th St. and WIS 22 to improve vision for motorists.
  • Extending new sidewalk along both sides of WIS 22 to Main St. and the WIS 156/Green Tree Rd. intersection.
  • Upgrading the intersection of WIS 22 and WIS 156/Green Tree Rd. Upgrades will include an all-way, stop controlled intersection and realignment of WIS 156 and Green Tree Rd. so the two side roads are directly across from each other.
  • Replacing the cityís water main and sanitary sewer systems.
