Project overview

The purpose of this project is to increase the safety of WIS 29, by eliminating the center turn lane and reducing the number of intersections and entrances to the highway. The potential for accidents is reduced by minimizing crossing traffic and improving stopping sight distances. Crews will also replace the deteriorating pavement.

Planned improvements

  • Replace 3.4 miles of pavement
  • Remove all existing at-grade intersections except at 144th Avenue, which will have right-in/right-out access only on westbound WIS 29.
  • Maratech Drive will be extended to 144th Avenue to ensure that property owners, south of WIS 29, retain local connectivity to WIS 29 after the access modifications are completed.
  • County O will be realigned to WIS 29, creating a new interchange. The new interchange will be centrally located between the interchange at WIS 107 and the interchange at 72nd Avenue.

Status/phase

Planning began in 2000, design work in 2009, construction began on August 13, 2012. Activities continue through winter 2012 and 2013. Motorists can expect lane closures as early as March 2013 as crews begin work on the County O interchange structure.
