I-39/US 51 (Business 51-Foxglove Rd.) - Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Why is it necessary to close the northbound I-39 on-ramp?

Closure of the northbound I-39 on-ramp allows for a safer, more desirable traffic condition for motorists on I-39 during staged construction. Closure of the ramp simplifies construction staging for the reconstruction of the southbound I-39 structures spanning Business 51, which reduces the time of construction and project costs.

Will bicycle and pedestrian accommodations be included in the project along Business 51?

Yes. The I-39 structures spanning Business 51 will be constructed to provide future on-street bike accommodations and to allow for the construction of a future multi-use path along Business 51.

Will new right of way be required?

No acquisition of right of way is required.

When will the entire interchange be reconstructed?

Reconstruction of the entire I-39/Business 51 interchange is currently expected to occur in 2015.

Will temporary signals be installed along Business 51 due to the increased traffic caused by the closure of the northbound I-39 on-ramp?

Traffic counts at various intersections along Business 51 were taken in 2010 to provide the design team with up-to-date traffic data.

This information was analyzed and it was determined that temporary signals are not warranted along Business 51 when Business 51 is used as the detour route during the northbound I-39 on-ramp closure.

Why can’t we do all of this proposed work at one time instead of spreading the work out over numerous years in order to minimize the amount of time the ramps are closed?

Work needs to be staged in order to minimize impacts to traffic and maximize safety on I-39.
