I-39/US 51 (Business 51-Foxglove Rd.) - Need/purpose

Why is this project needed?

Existing southbound I-39/US 51 bridge over Business 51 and the southbound I-39/US 51 bridge over the Wisconsin River are reaching the end of their service life and are in need of repair/replacement.

Existing southbound I-39/US 51 pavement is also showing deterioration and in need of repair.

Purpose

Improve safety of I-39/US 51 and eliminate structural deficiencies by repairing or replacing the existing bridges and improving the roadway surface by replacing the pavement.

Project benefits

The structure over Business 51 will be raised to alleviate the substandard vertical clearance with the Canadian National Railroad.

The structure on I-39/US 51 over the Wisconsin River will be widened to meet current design standards for shoulder widths and increase capacity to four lanes; three through lanes and one off ramp.

Southbound I-39/US 51 exit ramp to Business 51 will be constructed as a separated parallel-style ramp, allowing the exit area to be much more visible to motorists.
