US 51 (Grand Ave.), Kent St. to Division St., in Wausau, Marathon County

Overview

  • Resurfacing 1.6 miles of Business 51 (Grand Ave.) between Kent St. and Division St.
  • Replacing the existing lighting system to meet current standards
  • Providing bicycle accommodations
  • Removing the existing corrugated median

Schedule

  • Construction began April 28. Work is scheduled for completion in October 2014.

Traffic impacts/Detours

  • Motorists can expect to encounter one lane in each direction and should plan for delays during peak travel times.
  • Access to adjacent properties will be provided at all times except for brief durations during milling and paving operations.

Kent Street to Townline Road

Stage one (late April to late June 2014)
  • The outside lane, between Kent St. and Townline Rd., will be closed.
  • Some of the unsignalized side road intersections will be closed to local traffic. The intersections with Weston and McDonald streets will remain open to right-in/right-out traffic only.
Stage two (late June to mid-July 2014)
  • The inside/median lanes, between Kent St. and Townline Rd., will be closed.
  • Some of the unsignalized side road intersections will to be closed to local traffic. The intersections with Weston and McDonald streets will remain open to right-in/right-out traffic only.

Townline Road to Division Street

Stage three (mid-July to mid-September 2014)
  • The outside lane, between Townline Rd. and Division St., will be closed.
  • Some of the unsignalized side road intersections will to be closed to local traffic. The intersection with Single Ave. will remain open to right-in/right-out traffic only.
  • Access to the fire station would be maintained at all times.
Stage four (mid-September to early October 2014)
  • The inside/median lanes, between Townline Rd. and Division St., will be closed.
  • Some of the unsignalized side road intersections will to be closed to local traffic. The intersection with Single Ave. will remain open to right-in/right-out traffic only.

Status

Construction is currently in stage three. This stage of construction involves a significant increase in construction traffic entering and exiting the project limits. Motorists will likely encounter longer delays and are encouraged to allow more time for travel or find an alternate route.
