US 51 (Rocky Run Rd.-Oneida County Y) - Need/purpose
Why is this project needed?
A significant section of this segment of US 51 (Rocky Run Rd.-Oneida County Y) has not been upgraded since it was constructed in 1938. The highway does not meet current design and safety standards.
US 51 (Rocky Run Rd.-Oneida County Y) is an important north/south corridor. On average 6,400 vehicles travel this 5.4 mile section each day.
The purpose of the proposed project is to cost-effectively, and with minimal interruption to the traveling public, address and eliminate the substandard and outdated features of US 51. In addition, the purpose is to provide a more efficient and safer roadway that will carry current and future traffic volumes with less congestion.
Project benefits/anticipated outcomes
The proposed improvements include:
- Reconstructing US 51 (Rocky Run Rd.-Oneida County Y) to improve the substandard vertical and horizontal alignment
- Lengthening the existing passing lanes
- Reconstructing intersections to meet current standards
- Replacing undersized culvert pipes carrying Rocky Run Creek, a Class II brook trout stream, with a larger box culvert
