Are bicycle and pedestrian accommodations being considered?

Yes. Bicycle and pedestrian accommodations will be included along the project segments of Marathon County K/Business 51, Marathon County U, and Overlook Drive.

Project also includes the construction of a multi use path along the north side of Business 51 from 14th Avenue to College Drive.

Why are roundabouts being constructed?

Right-angle crashes (commonly referred to as “T-bones”) are the predominate type of crash that is occurring at the project intersections.

Studies have shown that roundabouts eliminate injury causing right-angle crashes.

Roundabouts also minimize intersection traffic delays and backups and are less expensive to maintain than signalized intersections.

Will new right of way be required?

The use of retaining walls to minimize right of way impacts and the acquisition of temporary easements will be implemented as much as practical.

However, permanent right of way acquisition is required throughout the interchange area to blend new roadway side slopes into the existing terrain.

When will construction begin and how long will it take?

Construction of US 51 and the interchange is expected to begin in the spring of 2013 and is expected to be finished late in 2014.
