Project overview

WisDOT, in consultation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), is studying alternatives to provide a safe and efficient crossing of the Wolf River in the village of Winneconne that also accommodates boat traffic on the Wolf River.

The study will develop and evaluate a range of potential WIS 116 Wolf River crossing locations, a three-quarter mile stretch of 116, and recommend a preferred crossing location.

The need to evaluate the Wolf River bridge and approaches is due primarily to deficiencies with the existing bridge.

This will result in the construction of a new WIS 116 Wolf River crossing or the rehabilitation of the existing bridge. Roadway improvements will also be made to the approaches leading to the bridge.

The location of the WIS 116 Wolf River crossing is vital to residents of Winneconne and the surrounding region. The next nearest Wolf River system crossings are the US 41 bridge over Lake Butte des Morts 9.5 miles to the southeast and the US 10 bridge near Fremont 19.5 miles to the north. This gap in the Wolf River system crossings increases the importance of the WIS 116 crossing.

In this growing corridor, the WIS 116 river crossing is a critical link, allowing residents to travel to and from Oshkosh and the Fox Valley on US 45 and US 41.

Status/phase

Study, with construction currently scheduled for 2017.
