Truesdell crossovers (Kenosha and Racine Counties)

The Truesdell project includes the installation of a universal crossover, a single crossover and two hotbox detectors along with two set-off tracks on Canadian Pacific’s railroad, near WIS 50 in Kenosha County. Each set-off track will consist of a manually operated switch, access roads for maintenance purposes, and approximately 500 linear feet of track. The proposed work will take place within Canadian Pacific’s right-of-way.

The major elements of the project include:

  • Install two new railroad crossover locations to allow a train on one track to cross over to another track.
  • Upgrade the two existing hot box detectors that signal a train car may need to be inspected.
  • Build two new setout tracks to provide a place for freight trains to remove individual cars that need repairs.
  • Provide two new access roads to the setout tracks for crews to make equipment repairs.
  • Provide two access roads near the crossovers to perform maintenance on the signal system.
  • Upgrade the railroad signal system and improve communications.

Amtrak Hiawatha and Canadian Pacific will continue to operate during construction.

The estimated project cost is $11,074,934, which is funded entirely by a grant from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).

WisDOT signed a cooperative agreement with the FRA in January 2011.

Status/phase

Construction is scheduled from May 2012 through the summer of 2013.
