Note - Following extensive review, WisDOT has decided to suspend work on the nine-mile WIS 38 major highway study from Oakwood Road in Milwaukee County to County K in Racine County. (July 31, 2013)
- In fall 2010, Wisconsin's Transportation Projects Commission (TPC) recommended four major highway project candidates, including the WIS 38 corridor. Once approved by the TPC and enumerated through the state budget, major highway projects frequently require several years to address real estate needs and utility impacts, it is common for a project to be delayed or accelerated based on many factors.
- Wisconsinís Major Highway Program includes some of the most complex and costly highway improvement projects planned or underway across the state. Needs in the state highway program significantly exceed available resources. Suspending work on the WIS 38 study will allow the department to address more significant priorities in the Majors program. The Department may request the TPC to consider de-enumeration of the project at a later date.
- Work conducted thus far on the WIS 38 study is not lost. Data and various alternatives can be re-visited depending on state and local government priorities and input. We will continue to have an open dialogue among WisDOT, area elected officials, business owners and citizens to monitor safety conditions and roadway pavement on this important stretch of roadway.
- Although the Major project study is being suspended, WisDOT will continue to examine less-costly improvements to mobility and safety in the corridor.
WIS 38, in the cities of Caledonia and Oak Creek, in Racine and Milwaukee counties (County K to Oakwood Rd.)
WisDOT is re-evaluating the 2004-2007 study on WIS 38, County K (Racine County) to Oakwood Rd. (Milwaukee County).
This re-evaluation is required since major project activities have not commenced since the original WIS 38 study and due to the amount of time that has passed since the original study environmental document was approved.
This re-evaluation will determine whether the consideration of alternatives, environmental constraints, future impacts and proposed mitigation measures in the original environmental document are still applicable, accurate and valid.
It also determines whether there have been any significant changes in these factors or the associated regulations, and whether design refinements might result in identification of new impacts or require further study of environmental factors.
We will be updating this website as the re-evaluation progresses.
Study with no construction activity at this time.
